L.H. Teachers ROCK!

Hello, we (Brenda and Karen) interviewed Ms. Marla Fouts, 2nd grade teacher, about the swimming competition that she won. She said, “It took 7 years to train and also that she was a lifeguard”. That’s why she wanted to enter the swimming contest. She had a bucket list and that was on her list to be in a swimming contest. Ms. Fouts never knew she would enter a swimming competition. Ms. Fouts admitted “She just tried the competition for fun.”  Ms. Fouts said  that she thought she may be good and that’s why she did it.
She also told us that she had lot of awards. She said that last summer she practiced swimming. Ms. Fouts admitted that when she was swimming that she was nervous and wanted to throw up, but she didn’t. She said “You are never too old to do stuff and accomplish your goals.”   She stated, “You should always try new things.”
Our champion participated in the 2011 Spring Intramural Swim Meet, at Gainesville State College. She won 1st place in the women over age 30 category, in 25 meter backstroke, 25 meter freestyle and the 25 meter breaststroke. She was awarded blue ribbons for all three events. Ms. Fouts also set the record at the college for women over 30 in the 25 meter backstroke.
This time, she only entered three events, but next year she wants to enter further distances. We are so proud of you!

    STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART
Today, we (Kate and Ivana) interviewed Ms. Fairchild. We asked her about the break-in that happened in our school, on February 11, 2011. Read more details going to the link below:
She told us how it hurt her so much she felt violated. She lost many things... When she found out about this she didn’t trust anyone any more. There were possibilities that he could have been forced to do this. They were drunk when they did this. If she would have seen them do this she would have called 911. She really didn’t hate them. They made bad choices. All of this ruined their life. Now they can’t get a good job. They didn’t really need those computers.   The thieves hurt her. She hasn’t heard of them lately. She only knew that one kid, whose picture is posted on the newspaper, used to go to Lyman Hall when he was younger. She felt so sad, so she decided that she would write a poem about them about how much they hurt her. Now, she forgives them and feels sorry for them. She feels like that because they made the wrong decision.
Ms. Fairchild used this awful situation as a teachable moment.  She was teaching free verse poetry to 5th graders.  The theme was "Where Are You From?" Kids were asked to put their hearts on paper and tell the world what is on their minds.  She used her personal experience to model how to write free verse poetry.  She gave  us permission to publish her poem. She wanted everyone to know how she feels.

Who Wins?
Broken glass everywhere
My drawers yanked out

My belongings
on the floor
You don’t even know me
What did I ever do to you?
You took my computer from me.
But you took more than that

You stole from my students
You stole
my time from them,
my lessons,
my flipcharts that would have helped
them learn.
Now you are in jail
And I still don’t have my computer
So who wins?
When a gang asks you

to do something stupid
and you decide to get drunk
and do it?
Who wins?
Nobody.
Sally Fairchild

DUCK CAM???

Angela and Lauren interviewed Mrs. Sanner about thes eagle project that is inquiry based learning, her favorite teaching method! The standards covered are posted on the root of the project: “Life Cycles of Animals,” but it also involves writing nonfiction, using technology, asking questions, and presenting a visual project (poster).  It has been a very motivating experience!

About a month ago, she let the kids view the Zoo Atlanta’s Panda Cam because one of the students was doing nonfiction writing about Pandas.  It was cute and we really enjoyed it.  This led to the question “I wonder if there are other “cams” out there that can let us see animals in real time.”  So, she did a Google search for wild animal cams and found this American Bald Eagle cam.  At the time, the eagles were just sitting on the eggs, kind of boring to watch, but they have the interactive information center by the side.  It is a treasure of information!  They began collecting facts and counting down to the projected hatch day. The first eaglet arrived on the weekend, but on Monday morning everyone was eager to see if any had hatched.  By the next week, all had hatched and Mr. and Mrs. Eagle were the proud parents of three bobbleheaded, grey fuzzy eaglets!  Class wrote about the experience, did group projects to show what they have learned, and continue to add new facts to the display.

After spring break, she is thinking about growing baby ducks in her classroom. Mrs. Sanner is going to get the eggs and an incubator. She can only get 8 eggs because half of them die.  She hopes to watch some mallard duck eggs hatch in her room, and set up a “duck cam,” so the whole school can share the arrival of our little ducklings.
The class is doing this to learn about life-cycles in science, math, reading and writing. Students are also going to learn about nutrition and how to nurture baby chicks. Mrs. Sanner told me that there were a lot of AHH moments during this project!

READING ACROSS AMERICA

Jennifer and I (Fatima) interviewed Ms. Amanda Hall, our Media Center Specialist, about Reading Across America! Ms. Hall was very excited about her interview.
She said Reading Across America is an annual event when schools across the United States celebrate each year, during the week of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. She also said Dr. Seuss is a very good author and kids like to read his books. Plus it is a good time to celebrate reading and to show students how fun and important reading is.
Ms. Hall said she is a fan of Dr. Seuss’s books because she like the silly words and she liked figuring out what the words meant. She said it was a good time to get kids excited about reading. Not just a week but for a life long. Ms. Hall said we focus on Dr. Seuss more because it is around his birthday!!
Thanks Mrs. Hall.
Enjoy the school's pictures!

CHRIS RUMBLE'S VISIT
Today, Julio and I (Freddy) interviewed Mrs. Murray on the visit of author Chris Rumble. Her favorite part was when he let the kids and teachers sing up in front of the audience, in the gym. She said that she got nervous and shy when she had to stay up on the stage with all the others.
Her favorite book would probably be The Good, The Bad and The Smelly. Mrs. Murray felt great about this author's visit to our school. She told us that his presentation had nothing to do with what she was teaching her students, at this moment. However, she knows that Chris Rumble's purpose was to entertain and inform. She added that a great imagination makes an amazing writer!  She liked his message to tell kids that reading can be fun! That's the end of our interview.
Thank you for you time.

See the pictures that document all the excitement!

Healthy Mind and Body

My name is Juan and I want to be a professional soccer player. I’m interviewing Coach Debbie Blake. She said that she played in a soccer team when she was in High school, and that she later became coach, taking the team to the state tournament.
Her advice is to always have to have the ball in your feet and do some tricks and that’s how you’re going to surprise other players. She said that when she is alone, she practices some footwork. When you practice by yourself you get better. If you love soccer, you have to have passion and you need to make sacrifices. If you want to win you have to work as a unit. If you want to win pass it to another player and let them score and your team will win just because you did a good pass.
You can always practice by kicking the wall to the cement or to the wall stopping it and kicking the ball. To be a professional soccer player you need to have skills, talent, and dedication. To become professional you have to join a soccer team when you’re young. You won’t be able to join a soccer team when you have low grades so always keep your grades up. Coaches always look for smart athletes. When you’re not doing anything get up and practice or somebody might be practicing harder than you to take your place, so practice hard to keep your spot in the soccer team.
Thank you for taking the time for this interview.

Mrs. Belford’s Grammar Rap - 1st Graders

Mrs. Belford's class learned about nouns, adjectives and verbs and wanted to have fun with this rap. Would you like to sing along?
Here are the lyrics:
A noun is a person, place or thing: like guy or school, or playground swing.
An adjective describes those too: Which one? What kind? How many? Whose?
A verb is an action or being kind of thing:  eat, walk, were, be shout, and sing!
Now you’ve heard our grammar rap, YO!

COMIC STRIP PROJECTS - Mrs. Wendt's 4th & 5th Graders

Students use an online tool to create a six-panel comic highlighting an imaginary dialogue between Sam and Mr. Jacket using new vocabulary words from previous lists/highlighted in the book My Side of the Mountain.   By creating comic strips or cartoon squares featuring characters in books, students are encouraged to think analytically about the characters, events, and themes they've explored in ways that expand their critical thinking by focusing on crystallizing the significant points of the book in a few short scenes.
We are proud to share our best products with you!
